You may have worked out already that the word Hypno-therapy is a combination of the two words: Hypnosis and Therapy… and it’s the combination of both these things that makes this type of complementary medicine so effective.
It’s in this state… the state we call hypnosis… where your mind becomes open to new ideas and new suggestions… changing the way you think; the way you feel and ultimately; the way you behave.
You do remain fully conscious throughout. Some, however, experience a sensation where you know the hypnotherapist is talking, but your conscious mind drifts and wanders onto other things and at times you may become less consciously aware of what the hypnotherapist is actually saying.
Hypnosis is not about being unconscious. It is about helping you change the automatic patterns of your unconscious mind. Your unconscious mind is where all your fears, phobias, bad habits and limiting beliefs are stored.
As I’ve said, when hypnotised it is possible for you to allow your mind to become so relaxed that you don’t completely remember what I’ve said during the hypnosis part of the session, and that’s absolutely fine. I will explain exactly why this happens and why it’s not important that you remember at a conscious level everything that has been said.
Everyone can be hypnotised, theoretically, so there’s no physical reason why everyone can’t be put into a hypnotic state; but there may be psychological reasons that someone is resistant to being hypnotised which might make it very difficult for that person to relax enough to enter a true hypnotic state. Usually people who are certain that they can’t be hypnotised have a deep seated need for control and think that if they allow themselves to be hypnotised they will be giving up control so they will never allow themselves to relax enough to get to the hypnotic state.
So, theoretically, anyone can be hypnotised. In fact, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and I would hazard a guess that you have actually experienced different forms of hypnosis many times before. Perhaps when you’ve been driving home on a familiar route, and your mind drifts off thinking about other things. Then before you know it you find yourself at your destination and think, ‘Oh… I don’t remember the last few miles.’
You were in a trance like state… you were in the state of hypnosis.
Hypnosis has been practised for more than a century and since 1955 hypnosis has been recognised by the British Medical Association as an approved treatment.
Hypnosis has now developed into a science and there is a section devoted to medical hypnosis at the Royal Society of Medicine in London.
This research clearly demonstrated that Hypnotherapy works faster than Behavioural therapy (CBT) and Psychoanalysis, and that Hypnotherapy displayed a higher percentage of success with 93% success rate.
